Using its experience as a provider of mobile information management solutions allowing users to access, collect, synchronize and print information on demand, Boise, Idaho-based Extended Systems Inc. unveiled XTNDConnect View, a software solution designed to give wireless devices secure, real-time, two-way access to groupware information.
According to Extended Systems, the software solution will provide access between wireless devices and enterprise applications, including Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, Post Office Protocol 3 and Internet Messaging Access Protocol 4 messaging platforms. Wireless devices supported include Research In Motion wireless handhelds, WAP and HDML mobile phones, Palm VII and Pocket PC personal digital assistants, and even a laptop computer with a wireless or wired modem.
“Extended Systems provides the solutions mobile workers want coupled with the management tools [information technology] managers need in today’s complex mobile environment,” explained Steve Simpson, president and chief executive officer of Extended Systems. “XTNDConnect View builds on Extended Systems’ vision to allow anywhere, any time access to enterprise data.”
The software will allow users to view all groupware information with a live connection, as well as view, create and accept appointments. Users also can scan message headers and choose which messages to read, respond to or forward, while deleted messages are automatically moved to the deleted folder on the company’s server.
For those concerned about security issues related to accessing corporate information wirelessly, XTNDConnect View employs RSA’s Secure Sockets Layer technology to provide 128-bit encryption over the Internet to the wireless network provider’s access point. Extended Systems said this assures IT administrators that data is transferred securely between corporate systems and mobile devices. In addition, XTNDConnect’s security system is designed to co-exist within an enterprise’s current security structure, leveraging existing network access protocols, and can be distributed behind multiple layers of firewalls. test
Mark Willnerd, product marketing manager for Extended Systems, noted that the solution is available as an extension to its current XTNDConnect Server, or as a stand-alone offering.
Extended Systems said the software includes multi-server support allowing load balancing and redundancy, and has been tested to provide support for more than 15,000 clients. The company expects to provide a 60-day trial version of the solution via its Web site beginning in November.
