SONERA SMARTTRUST, ERICSSON TEAM ON E-COMMERCE SECURITY SOLUTION

GENEVA – Sonera SmartTrust and L.M. Ericsson announced a digital signature solution for secure wireless e-commerce using Wireless Application Protocol-enabled phones. Sonera SmartTrust developed wireless security solutions based on Public Key Infrastructure, digital signatures and 1024 bit RSA data encryption. Ericsson developed the new R320 WAP-enabled handset. “A transparent, secure technology, combined with the graphical interface of a WAP device, opens the door for us and for service providers to the future in wireless e-commerce,” said Harri Vatanen, senior vice president of Sonera and head of SmartTrust.

“Our objective is to provide potential partners and customers with complete solutions enabling secure communications between advanced mobile devices, customers and service providers. WAP will be a critical operational environment for our solutions and applications.”

Christian Testman, director of wireless e-solutions, GSM systems, Ericsson Radio Systems, said for mobile users, “this means that wireless banking, ticketing, trading, gaming and a range of other Internet services now can be transacted securely.”

Sonera SmartTrust also announced it will partner with Cable & Wireless HKT to develop high-security mobile e-commerce services for corporations and consumers in Hong Kong.

“We believe there is tremendous potential in Hong Kong for mobile commerce, as the penetration of mobile phones here-at more than 50 percent-is much higher than for PCs and the Internet,” said Freddie Cheung, area business manager, Sonera SmartTrust Hong Kong. “These new mobile commerce services will be the first in Hong Kong to conform to Hong Kong Post’s certification authority services, giving security for both parties in the transaction.”
