UZBEKISTAN ORDER TOTALS $3.7 BILLION FOR NORTEL

DALLAS-Northern Telecom Ltd. received a contract valued at $3.7 billion from Uzdunrobita, a joint venture between ICG Inc. of Perry, Ga., and the Uzbekistan Ministry of Communications-of the Uzbekistan republic in the Commonwealth of Independent States-to extend digital cellular coverage to the region’s five largest cities.

Earlier this year, Nortel installed a Time Division Multiple Access system serving the Uzbekistan cities of Tashkent, Samarkand and Karchi with fixed and mobile telephone service. Nortel said some people in this region had waited 20 years for telephone service.
