On this episode of HetNet Happenings, host Sean Kinney takes you inside the recent LTE North America trade show with a look at some of the highlights.
The latest and greatest in enterprise small cells, DAS/RAN integration and carrier 5G outlook were all on display at the recent LTE North America show.
In the first segment, Luigi Tarlazzi of CommScope discusses the benefit of a CPRI interface between a DAS headend and a BBU.
He discussed the problems associated with in-building wireless. “If you want, you can say that those are the new cell sites. Unfortunatley, the cell sites are standardized like any macro cell site, but they’re all different,” in terms of power, capacity, location and access. “What we’re trying to find is the right architecture to address most, if not all, of those problems,” he said.
With CPRI, “It’s not really a standard, but we believe, potentially, it’s an extremely powerful interface.” He said having CPRI between the BBU and DAS head end “provides a huge savings in terms of capex, opex and performance.”
In the second segment, moderator Haig Sarkissian, Principal Consultant at Wireless 20/20 and panelists  Art King, Director of Enterprise at SpiderCloud Wireless and Eric Colard, Head of Emerging Line of Business and Synchronization Business Unit at MicroSemi, discuss enterprise small cells, and the importance of facilitating LTE services for enterprises, security challenges, device management strategies and applications for work-devices and more.
In the final segment, Kinney takes a look as Chris Pearson, president of 4G Americas, leads a discussion with telecom analyst Phil Solis, Mark McDiarmid, VP of Radio Network Engineering and Development for T-Mobile US (seated center), and Brian Daly, Director for Core and Government/Regulatory Standards at (seated left)AT&T about various aspects of 5G.
