UNE EPM, Digicel Haiti named new CEOs

Two telecom operators have named new CEOs. After announcing an interim president, Colombian public carrier UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones SA named Marc Eichmann as its new president. He will start next February 1.

Eichmann is a mechanical engineer and has experience in management positions in telecommunications companies, financial and public services. He has served as manager of planning and new business at International Gas Transportation Company (TGI), director of commercial strategy at Telefonica Movistar Movistar and corporate controller at Movistar and costs and profitability manager at Telefónica Colombia, among other charges.

Among Eichmann’s most important challenges leading UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones is continuing the consolidation of UNE as a national enterprise, offering differentiated and innovative marketing strategies, starting the operation of the LTE mobile broadband.

In Central America, Digicel Group announced that Damian Blackburn, formerly CEO of Digicel Honduras, will assume the role of CEO of Digicel Haiti and group director of special projects effective immediately. He takes over from Maarten Boute who has been CEO of Digicel Haiti for three years.

Blackburn joined Digicel Group three and a half years ago as group operational development director. He was then promoted to the role of regional CEO which saw him overseeing twelve Caribbean markets before moving to Honduras in October 2010 to lead the Digicel business there until its acquisition by America Movil in November 2011.

Prior to joining Digicel, Blackburn held senior management positions with Virgin Mobile, BT Group and Vodafone in the Europe. In his new role, Damian will report directly to Digicel Group CEO, Colm Delves.

Despite the challenges posed by the devastating January 2010 earthquake, the cholera outbreak and a prolonged period of political instability, Boute steered the business through a strong growth phase which saw subscribers increase by 1.5 million and revenues by 60%.

Boute will remain with Digicel in Haiti until the end of March to support the transition.
