Nokia Networks signs 5G MoU with Arab telco Du

5G radio demo has already been conducted

Nokia Networks and United Arab Emirates mobile operator Du signed a memorandum of understanding on a set of common objectives for the development and evolution of “5G” and the “Internet of Things.”

The companies carried out a 5G radio demonstration at GITEX Technology Week. The demo featured – for the first time in the Middle East – live, ultra-high-speed communications of up to 10 gigabits per second over the air in the millimeterWave band.

Under the terms of the MoU, Nokia Networks and Du agree to leverage their combined expertise and enhance cooperation and testing of future-ready 5G technology. The MoU also includes collaboration and consulting in terms of the introduction and trial of Nokia Networks’ small cells, Centralized RAN, multivendor Self-Organizing Networks and IoT solutions, as well as the shift to telco cloud and Heterogeneous Networks.

Du recently launched its LTE-A network through a partnership with Nokia Networks. In June 2012, the operator commercially launched LTE services on 1800 megahertz. Founded in 2007, the Arab telecom operator serves more than 7.5 million individual customers and over 80,000 businesses in the UAE. The telco also provides services for the enterprise segment.

Five Polish telcos obtain 4G LTE spectrum

In other EMEA news, Poland raised more than 2.18 billion euro ($2.47 billion) from the sale of mobile frequencies for the provision of 4G LTE services, according to the Office of Electronic Communications.

Six telecom operators have participated in the tender for 19 blocks of spectrum in the 800 MHz and 2.6 GHz bands. Five operators obtained frequencies in the tender, UKE revealed.

Operators paid a total of 2.04 billion euro for the five blocks of 800 MHz spectrum.

Mobile operator Orange acquired two blocks of spectrum in the 800 MHz band as well as three blocks of 2.6 gigahertz frequencies. The operator paid 748 million euro for all the obtained spectrum.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile, Netnet and P4 each acquired one lot of 800 MHz spectrum. T-Mobile also obtained three lots of 2.6 GHz spectrum and P4 four blocks in the same band.

Polkomtel acquired four blocks of spectrum in the 2.6 GHz band, according to the regulator.
