HP bolsters NFV platforms targeting communication providers

NFV platform updates look to support commercial deployments

Hewlett-Packard bolstered its network functions virtualization platforms with the launch of numerous updates designed to ease the transition to virtualized services for telecom operators.

The updates include the launch of its HP NFV System, which the company said is a “pre-integrated” NFV platform designed to allow service providers to accelerate production NFV deployments. The “pre-integrated” aspect of the platform is the inclusion of HP’s Helion OpenStack Carrier Grade open source-based cloud platform, which builds on the company’s previously announced Helion platform that was part of a $1 billion investment plan for OpenStack.

HP said the system includes its NFV Starter Kit that provides compute nodes, control nodes running virtual infrastructure management software and physical infrastructure management software and storage nodes; the NFV Compute Kit that includes server nodes designed to run VNF workloads and can be added to the Starter Kit to augment workload processing capacity; the NFV Control Kit that includes Helion OpenStack Carrier Grade VIM software and PIM software; and a NFV Storage Kit that can be integrated with the Starter Kit to provide additional capacity for “storage intensive applications like content delivery networks.”

HP also unveiled its NFV Director 3.0 service, which is designed to provide management and orchestration capabilities for operations support systems and analytics tied to real-time decision making. HP said the service is powered by its Vertica platform and combines OSS and IT management to a multivendor NFV orchestration solution designed to automate services and increase scalability in current OSS deployments.

The NFV Director 3.0 and optional analytics platform are available separately or can be fully integrated into the NFV System and OpenStack Carrier Grade platform.

To help with integration needs, HP also announced its technology services consulting operations that includes strategy, proof-of-concept, assessment, validated active design, integration, solution support and program management. The support is available through call handling and access to technical specialists.

The new platforms are set to be available by the third quarter.
