Verizon to buy EdgeCast

Verizon is deepening its commitment to mobile and online content delivery with the purchase of EdgeCast Networks, a content delivery network provider that specializes in e-commerce, media and entertainment. EdgeCast will become part of Verizon Digital Media Services, and the companies hope to finalize the transaction by early next year. The two companies did not disclose a purchase price.

EdgeCast customers include LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tumblr, Lifetime Networks, The Atlantic and Jet Blue. The company says its caching, site acceleration and streaming services are used by more than 6,000 clients.

“The combination of EdgeCast and Verizon Digital Media Services will allow us to fully exploit and accelerate growth in Internet media consumption and online business performance,” said Bob Toohey, president of Verizon Digital Media Services.

Currently Verizon works with EdgeCast competitor Akamai for content delivery network (CDN) solutions. Akamai, which also provides CDN services to AT&T, said last week that it is buying Prolexic to bolster its security for data center and enterprise applications.

EdgeCast is the second acquisition in less than a month for Verizon Digital Media Services. Last month the company said it will buy the assets and operations of upLynk. upLynk’s technology facilitates the upload and encoding of live video events.
