FCC to align comment cycle on Verizon Wireless spectrum deals

The Federal Communications Commission said it would adjust the deadline for filing comments on recent spectrum deals announced by Verizon Wireless, adding that the alignment is not an attempt to coordinate or link the consideration of those proposed deals.

The move followed petitions from a handful of regional wireless operators and industry groups, including MetroPCS Communications, Ntelos Holdings and the Rural Telecommunications Group.

Those entities appear to be concerned about Verizon Wireless’ recently announced spectrum swap deal with Leap Wireless and its plans to acquire spectrum assets from a cadre of cable companies and Cox Communications that were announced late last year.

“We find that the public interest would be served by extending the dates for filing comments on the above-referenced Verizon Wireless/Leap Wireless applications (and thus the filing window remains open), and adopting identical comment cycles for the Verizon Wireless/Leap Wireless, Verizon Wireless/SpectrumCo, and Verizon-Wireless/Cox applications,” the FCC noted on Dec. 30.
