AT&T Mobility says it has something for everyone with its five new Android smartphones introduced today. From entertainment to business to social media, the company is clearly trying to market specific phones to different groups of customers.
The Motorola Mobility Inc. Atrix 2 is aimed at customers who frequently use their smartphone to access movies and music and to browse the Internet. It’s a “4G-“ready phone running Google Inc.’s Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operatinng system, with a 1 GHz dual-core processor and 4.3-inch qHD display. It comes with a new free app called ZumoCast app, which AT&T says will let users easily access their music, playlists, pictures and videos stored on their computer.
The Pantech Corp. Pocket is a lower-end smartphone also aimed at entertainment enthusiasts. It also runs Android 2.3, supports AT&T Mobility’s HSPA+-based “4G” network, and has a wider, squarish 4-inch touchscreen.
The Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. Captivate Glide is being marketed to those who use smartphones extensively for business. It runs Android 2.3, has a side-slide keyboard, and a 1 GHz dual-core processor. It has access to the carriers HSPA+ network and features a front-facing camera for video chat. AT&T Mobility says the Captiviate Glide features virtual private network access and device encryption to keep data secure. It also offers task synchronization and global address lookup.
The Samsung DoubleTime is a pink and white phone running Android 2.2. It features a 3.2-megapixel camera with a camcorder, voice recognition and a dedicated function key for shortcuts. The device also sports five scrolling home screens, and flip keyboard, that the carrier says it is perfect for “texting, multitasking and staying connected to social networks.”
Finally, AT&T Mobility also announced the ZTE Corp. Avail for its GoPhone prepaid service. The device runs Android 2.3 and features a 3.5-inch touch screen and a 5-megapixel camera.
AT&T Mobility says it’s ahead of schedule when it comes to getting new Android smartphones to market. In January, the company committed to introduce 12 Android smartphones in 2011, and with these five new products the total is already at 19, with more promised for later this year.
