Opera Software ASA introduced a BREW-enabled version of its popular Mini browser for mobile phones.
Opera Mini, which has been downloaded by more than 27 million mobile users, formats Internet content for the smaller screens and limited memory of wireless handsets. The offering is designed to boost data-transmission speeds and allow users to access Web sites that may not otherwise be usable on a phone.
The application is available for smartphones and Java-enabled handsets through carriers as well as directly to consumers. But BREW users apparently cannot download Opera Mini directly-an attempt on one Verizon Wireless feature phone resulted in the message, “Your phone model . does not support Java,” and asks users to visit Opera’s site on a PC.
Opera executives were not immediately available for comment. Indian operator Tata Teleservcies Ltd. carries the offering as a white-label mobile browser for it subscribers.
Opera Mini now available for BREW devices
