U.S. Cellular to close Ore. call center

CHICAGO-U.S. Cellular Corp. said it plans to close its customer care center in Medford, Ore., as part of a realignment associated with the recent market swap with Alltel Corp. The carrier said the closure would affect approximately 170 employees.

U.S. Cellular noted that it expects to incur between $2 million and $4 million in charges associated with the closing, a portion of which likely will be absorbed during the third quarter. U.S. Cellular still operates call centers in Tulsa, Okla.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Madison and Waukesha, Wis.; Knoxville, Tenn.; and Bolingbrook, Ill.

The market swap, which was announced earlier this month, called for U.S. Cellular to exchange its operations in southern Idaho for Alltel subsidiary Western Wireless Corp.’s operations in Kansas and Nebraska.
