In the same week that UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones President Horacio Vélez de Bedout submitted his resignation to the board, the government telecom announced that it has partnered with compatriot firm Enlace Operativo and Mexican company Kio Networks to develop a data center in Colombia.
Bedout will stay as president until Jan. 2. After that, he will become a manager at the Institute for the Development of Antioquia (Idea). For both positions he was appointed by the Antioquia Governor-elect Sergio Fajardo Valderrama.

In his letter of resignation, Bedout noted among the highlights of his tenure UNE’s consolidation in one of the three companies of Colombia’s telecommunications sector.
Data center
UNE EPM, Enlace Operativo and Kio Networks are investing U.S. $80 million to create a local company called Kio Colombia, which will be in charge of developing the data center in the city of Antioquia. The companies are aiming to launch the data center by the end of 2012 to provide data center services domestically and to other Latin American markets, UNE said.
Kio Networks and Enlace Operativo will each own 37.5% of the local subsidiary, with UNE taking the remaining 25%, according to local media reports. Enlace is aiming to expand its operations, whie UNE is interested in provide information and communications technology solutions to increase its growth and Kio Networks is betting on the Colombian market.
Enlace Operativo focuses on business process outsourcing and information technology outsourcing services. It is fully owned by Colombian group Grupo Sura. Kio Networks provides IT services and is headquartered in Mexico City.
