Net to implement Wi-Fi hotspots in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian carrier Net is expanding its broadband services by installing Wi-Fi hotspots in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The project is still a pilot, but follows an international trend. Some mobile operators are using Wi-Fi in order to offload its 3G networks. “Our objective is to add value to our customers,” said Net product and services director, Márcio Carvalho.
Net is focus on offering fixed Internet, telephony and cable TV, and according to Carvalho, the target is to create loyalty among its clients. The pilot project is already running. Net has installed Wi-Fi hotspots in some places where its network is already deployed and where people tend to congregate, such as malls, universities, airports and restaurants. “We are evaluating what works better, and building our business case,” said Carvalho.
Net does not disclose its investments nor its suppliers. The company is analyzing several indoor and outdoor solutions, and considering providers for radio, routers, modem, among others items. The final offer, the director  explained, depends on what market research shows. “I don’t think we are going to compete with mobile broadband,” said Carvalho.
