No Skype for Windows Phone 7

It’s always a rather telling sign when popular VoIP companies like Skype decide not to put time and effort into developing software compatible with your platform, and that’s exactly what has just happened for Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 7 Phone.
Australian website Smarthouse says that Skype’s Dan Neary, VP for Asia Pacific, said the firm would not be developing a mobile version of its software for the Windows Phone 7 platform, although he was “hesitant” to explain why that was the case.
Skype is not, however, hesitating to develop an app for the iPhone, Symbian and Android operating systems. It seems Windows mobile, even in its new revamped form, just isn’t worth the effort.
It isn’t just Skype backing away from the upcoming OS. A couple of months back Mozilla also announced it would not be developing its Firefox mobile browser for Win Phone 7, using the excuse that the platform doesn’t allow for the development of applications running native code.
So while Silverlight and XNA may be alright for some, it may just prove a deal-breaker for countless others, which begs the question – will Windows Phone 7 be able to compete in an overcrowded mobile OS space if it lacks the apps?
