Samsung Mobile reports that Fort Worth-based American Airlines is prepping to provide airline passengers who travel first class with a Galaxy 10.1 tablet for use on select flights. The tablet will replace other personal in-flight entertainment devices that are currently outfitted in premium cabins on American planes.
The rollout for tablet use is planned on flights taking off between New York’s JFK hub and Los Angeles, JFK and San Francisco, Boston to Los Angeles if on a 757, and Miami and Los Angeles, provided the flight is on a 767-200 or 767-300. International flights to and from South America and Europe on a 767-300 will also have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 available for use in luxury cabins.
“Through our agreement with Samsung, American is the first North American airline to offer a branded tablet onboard its aircraft,” said Virasb Vahidi, chief commercial officer, at American Airlines. “We are working hard to revitalize our fleet and invest wisely in new products and services to modernize and enhance the travel experience. Working with Samsung to outfit our premium cabins with the innovative Galaxy tab will give our premium customers a modern and innovative in-flight entertainment experience.”
Samsung, which announced the deal, did not say when American plans on rolling out the tablets to its planes but did say that the airline plans to deploy 6,000 of the Galaxy devices later this year.
The Galaxy 10.1 is a Wi-Fi enabled tablet that combines the Android 3.1 Honeycomb platform with a slim design measuring 8.6 mm thick and a 10-inch touchscreen. Samsung said that a number of applications will be preloaded and available for in-flight entertainment to travelers.
Starting June 17, the Galaxy 10.1 tablet will be available for sale nationwide.
