Nokia Siemens Networks could cut as many as 1,500 jobs picked up as part of its acquisition of Motorola Inc. assets earlier this year, according to published reports.
NSN gained around 7,000 employees through the purchase, which included Motorola’s CDMA assets. Both Nokia and Siemens recommitted to the joint venture earlier this year after failing to find a suitable private-equity partner. The infrastructure division was the only unit in Nokia that improved in second-quarter earnings, but it is still running at a loss. Sales were up 20% from the year-ago period to $5.2 billion. And while the company still reported a loss of nearly $160 million on the joint venture, losses are moving in the right direction, incrementally inching their way to a break-even point at least.
