DALLAS-Northern Telecom Inc. plans to incorporate Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Java Software Platform and Java Powered chips into its future telephones for residential, enterprise and wireless applications.
Java is an Internet programming language. Java Powered chips are specialized microprocessors optimized to run Java applications.
The first application will be for the company’s landline PowerTouch phone. Wireless personal communications services phones using the technology may be introduced in the second half of 1997, the company said.
“We want an open system that will compel software developers to create applications for enhanced telephony,” said Rick Faletti, president of Nortel’s Multimedia Communication Systems division. “Our next-generation sets will establish a new standard in the communications industry as they redefine the capabilities and parameters of what a telephone can do.”
The company believes the technology will allow network operators, Internet service providers and third party developers to create Java-compatible applications and services. Client/server-based applications will allow customized services for end users and differentiation for service providers.
