NEXTWAVE BEGINS SAN ANTONIO DEMO

SAN ANTONIO-NextWave Telecom Inc. began operating a personal communications services demonstration system in San Antonio, a market scheduled to be one of NextWave’s first launches.

NextWave also is operating Code Division Multiple Access-based PCS demonstration systems in San Diego and Washington, D.C.

The company said that it is planning to offer service later this year in San Antonio, San Diego, Boston and Orlando, Fla.

“We have made substantial progress in our national network buildout, and we are developing PCS systems in 14 markets throughout the country,” said Edward Knapp, chief technical officer and senior vice president of engineering for NextWave.

“At this time, 90 percent of the microwave links needed to clear our spectrum have been relocated or will be relocated for initial network launch. We have identified and pre-qualified thousands of cell sites, and we have signed hundreds of leasing agreements for our PCS antennas.”
