NAPERVILLE, Ill.-Spyglass Inc. announced it has licensed its Spyglass Prism content conversion technology to Nokia Telecommunications.
The Prism technology answers needs of wireless users browsing the Web, said Spyglass. It is a server-based solution that reduces the time required to access Web sites by converting Web content to the specific display characteristics of devices such as wireless laptops, handheld computers, personal digital assistants or mobile phones, explained the company.
Nokia, which had introduced an open standard messaging concept called Smart Messaging using the Nokia Artuse Messaging Platform, is expected to provide more details on its planned use of Spyglass Prism by the end of the year.
“In order to make Internet access truly useful for wireless users, it is critical to deliver the fastest possible performance,” said Petri Poyhonen, vice president, Wireless Data Server Systems for Nokia Telecommunications. “We believe that Spyglass Prism is unique in that it directly addresses performance by reducing the amount of data transmitted to only what the end-user device is capable of displaying.”
Spyglass Prism is server-based software that works with any Web browser, and requires no special software on the device itself.
Nokia is the third announced licensee of Spyglass Prism. Spyglass previously announced licensing agreements with GTE Corp. and Geoworks, which provides smart phone software solutions. GTE is developing Web-based services using enhanced-display telephones. Geoworks is enabling cellular operators to provide smart phone users access to any Web page by automatically reconfiguring the pages to meet the requirements of mobile device screens.
