SUNNYVALE, Calif.-Conductus Inc. said initial results from field trials with two new cellular operators show that its ClearSite receiver front-end subsystem reduces dropped calls and interference, fills in coverage gaps and improves overall voice quality. The tests involved five base stations.
One operator, located in the Southeast, plans to use ClearSite to enhance base station coverage for low-power handsets. The local geography varies from rolling hills to mountainous terrain, leading to coverage gaps. In one of the tests, calls would routinely drop in a .5-mile coverage gap located five miles from the site, well within the site’s expected footprint.
The gap was eliminated with ClearSite installed, enabling calls to cover the site’s entire 11-mile radius footprint, Conductus said. “In essence, the coverage pattern of this cell that previously resembled Swiss cheese has been made more uniform,” the company wrote.
The other operator, located in the Midwest, is looking to enhance its base station footprint after it completes the rollout of Time Division Multiple Access service in the first half of the year, said Conductus.
