Research In Motion is expected to introduce a next-generation version of its Inter@ctive two-way messaging device, code-named Leapfrog, sometime this month.
The new model is closer to the size of a traditional two-way pager than the original model and retains the full Qwerty keyboard style. It is wearable and features a longer battery life, added messaging functions, higher capacity and speed, and retails for much cheaper than the older model, although price specifics were not available at press time.
The device is being released in conjunction with BellSouth Wireless Data, which announced a press tour for an announcement later this month, without disclosing the details.
Dedicated data network providers BellSouth Wireless and Ardis use the Inter@ctive pager for two-way text messaging in both vertical and horizontal applications. While the carriers’ networks have been touted for their effective real-time messaging capabilities, critics have said the Inter@ctive pager was too big and expensive to pose much of a threat to two-way paging providers. A next-generation device has been anticipated for some time, and is expected to allow dedicated network operators to better compete in the two-way paging arena.
