Berkeley Varitronics Systems | February 14, 2011 | Press Release
WUS and Canadian cordless phones unknowingly brought to Europe are interfering with mobile communications
February 14, 2011 – Metuchen, NJ and Barcelona, Spain — Berkeley Varitronics Systems, Inc. (BVS), a leading provider of advanced wireless solutions and products to the domestic and international wireless telecommunications and security markets today announced a major new DECT 6.0 detection feature for its PRO series handheld cell phone detector called the Wolfhound-PRO™. It will be introduced at the BVS Stand A58, Hall 2-1 at the Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona. The Wolfhound-PRO is the third in a line of BVS’ advanced, award winning cell phone detection products and the most advanced in terms of sensitivity and features.
The Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications standard, better known as DECT, is used for creating cordless phone systems targeted primarily for homes and to some degree for small offices. However, when DECT 6.0 phones, designed for use in the US and Canada, are illegally used in the EU, their up-link channels (1920 – 1930 MHz) can interfere with some of the up-link channels of UMTS cell phones employed by European mobile communications carriers.
The use of US DECT 6.0 phones in Europe has been a growing problem causing significant interference in the up-link bands of the European UMTS licensed services.  Network operators throughout Europe have been frustrated in the amount of interference that can cause havoc to their licensed UMTS mobile service from the base station.
They certainly hear about this from subscribers when their calls drop from strong interference, but the problem to date has been to isolate the interferer down to the last few hundred feet. The problem is aggravated by the fact that DECT phones use a fixed RF power level, which in many cases will grossly exceed interference threshold(s) for GSM/UMTS. Recently, a Swiss carrier said it spends an average of 18 hours on each case of interference investigated and the number of cases is growing.
This is where the Wolfhound-PRO effectively fills the gap.  The unit is a hand-held lightweight instrument consisting of a scanning narrow-band receiver equipped with a high-gain directional broadband antenna capable of guiding the user to within an arm’s length of the culprit sources, be they cell phones or cordless phones (including DECT and DECT 6.0).
“Finding North American DECT 6.0 cordless ‘interferers’ has never been easier with The Wolfhound-PRO’S high speed, patent-pending receiver and ‘detection’ algorithm that allows for quick location of these illegal interfering cordless phones,” said Scott Schober, President and CEO of Berkeley Varitronics Systems.
The Wolfhound-PRO with the DECT 6.0 detection feature is being ‘unleashed’ at the Mobile World Congress 2011 Barcelona, Feb. 14-17th, Stand A58, Hall 2-1 where visitors can pick up a BVS white paper explaining the interference and the solution to this problem.
