STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson introduced its first product as a result of its participation
in the Symbian initiative-a mobile companion to Global System for Mobile communications phones called the MC
218.
The product is designed according to Ericsson’s divided smart-phone concept, in which the voice-based phone
and data-based personal assistant are kept separate, but can be joined when needed.
Along those lines, the MC 218
contains both Wireless Application Protocol functionality and runs on the EPOC operating system, on which the
Symbian initiative is based. The device supports e-mail, fax, short message service and Internet-access capabilities and
works with any Ericsson GSM mobile phone, the company said.
