BETHESDA, Md.-The U.S. Department of Defense extended two global satellite service contracts with Comsat Mobile Communications, valued at more than $5.7 million, which include digital voice, data, high-speed data and secure communications for worldwide ship-to-shore, ship-to-ship and remote land locations, said the company.
The services provided enable the U.S. military to report ship locations, speeds and sailing direction; send information on weather conditions; transfer personnel, supply and maintenance records; and support the distribution of morale, welfare, education and recreational programs, said Comsat.
Under a separate satellite communications contract, Comsat said Defense chose to exercise the option year to continue the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service radio service to sailors and U.S. Marines aboard U.S. Navy ships. The $1.7 million contract runs through January 2000.
