SAN ANTONIO – The Competitive Carriers Association has seen its prominence across the mobile space grow in recent years thanks to its ability to attract larger carrier members and significant wins in lobbying efforts for its traditional carrier members. CCA President and CEO Steve Berry spoke with RCR Wireless News at the trade organization’s spring event, providing insight into a number of topics impacting the organization’s constituency.
Berry started off providing an overview of the event, touching on some of the larger news out of the show, including a keynote speech from Sprint and Softbank Chairman Masayoshi Son.
Son spoke about the need for greater cooperation from carriers outside of the nation’s two largest operators – Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility – in order to provide more robust competition. Son has hinted at a possible acquisition of T-Mobile US in an attempt to garner the scale needed to be more competitive.
Berry also reiterated the importance of spectrum to wireless carriers, emphasizing the need for new spectrum assets as well as for regulators to offer up spectrum licenses in sizes that would allow rural carriers to partake in upcoming spectrum auctions.
Representatives from a number of CCA members sat down during a keynote event at the event to provide their views on how the FCC should handle upcoming spectrum auctions, including the AWS-3 and 600 MHz incentive auction.
Finally, Berry provided more color on CCA’s announcement with Sprint and NetAmerica that will look to tap into Sprint’s Network Vision program, the 700 MHz spectrum resources of rural carriers and a growing device ecosystem able to support Band Class 12.
