SINGAPORE – Nokia Siemens Networks says it has given its Liquid Radio architecture a boost by launching a higher power radio module for its Flexi Multiradio Base Station family at CommunicAsia.
In mobile networks, the radio module is the part of the base station that amplifies each individual radio signal before broadcasting it from the antenna.
Of course, more power means improved signal, and NSN says the new module provides 40% more performance at the edge of cells, for more 3G data capacity and greater GSM coverage.
The firm also claims this new module can allocate carriers frequencies across a broad 60MHz range, despite reducing the size of the hardware required per base station site, allowing for more flexibility when it comes to deployment.
The radio module certainly seems flexible in terms of where it can be used, with NSN noting it can be installed inside, outside, distributed, mast pole or even at six sector sites, providing up to 240 watts of output power per sector or 80 watts output to each of three sectors.
It’s also purportedly the only radio unit in the industry that can be placed next to an antenna.
The first frequency variants of the radio module include 900, 900 J, 1800 and 2100 frequency bands, with more due out in 2012.
