WASHINGTON-More than one in four of the calls to an identity theft hotline created by the Federal Trade Commission reported that a communications service-including cellular-had been established using fraudulent identification.
The FTC hotline receives more than 1,000 calls per week, said Jeffrey Klurfeld, director of the FTC Western Regional Office. Klurfeld recently testified before a field hearing of the Senate Judiciary technology, terrorism and government information subcommittee.
The hotline was established in November along with a Web site that has received more than 139,000 hits, said the FTC.
The FTC will hold a two-day identity theft workshop on Oct. 23-24.
