OXFORD, United Kingdom-Sonera, one of Europe’s more innovative mobile operators, claims it will shortly unveil a software architecture that will enable companies, or other mobile operators, to offer a fully managed Internet service. The company revealed this move as it announced the availability of its Next Generation Internet (NGI) technology designed to provide a predictable level of service to fixed clients.
The company claims that, by using its NGI technology, Internet operators can set the level of data throughput each connected user will receive. This ranges from a “Gold” service, where the video streaming performance is required, down to “best efforts” where no quality of service is offered.
Mika Uusitalla, Sonera’s vice president of technology, said the company has managed to make the managed NGI architecture work with mobile technology, such as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) handsets, but admitted this was still under development.
