NEW YORK-Millicom International Cellular announced it was awarded a nationwide GSM license to offer services in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The company said it was awarded frequencies for a GSM 900 network and will develop its services in a joint venture with the Office Centrale des Postes et Telecommunications, the local PTT.
The company said Congo has a population of 52 million people and a fixed-line penetration rate of less than 1 percent.
