U.K. agency says auctions not harmful

LONDON—The U.K. National Audit Office (NAO) said the third-generation (3G) spectrum auctions in the United Kingdom did not harm the telecom industry, as some industry experts have suggested. Operators in the United Kingdom paid more than US$32 billion for 3G licenses.

Because of the downturn in the telecom industry, many industry professionals have questioned whether 3G operators can recoup their network and license investments. However, the NAO said the U.K. government made the best decision in auctioning the licenses.
