Nokia Solutions and Networks recently completed a series of test cases for voice-over-LTE on China Mobile’s TD-LTE network, including what it called the world’s first live video call over this kind of network. The tests utilized Nokia’s Single Radio Voice Call Continuity service.
An LTE network video call that leverages ESRVCC allows users to complete a high-quality call over the IP Multimedia system overVoLTE, which is then transferred to 2G/3G with voice continuity. Test are needed to fine tune the technology, as the current process interrupts the voice portion when coverage is not available.
Trials demonstrate benefits
To successfully perform the trials, China Mobile established parallel VoLTE projects with several other mobile broadband equipment vendors in other regions as well. The first TDD ESRVCC video call was completed by Nokia and China Mobile on Jan. 4. Extensive testing efforts continued on Jan. 29 aimed at illustrating the benefits LTE network voice services could provide.
“Implementing VoLTE is a definite competitive advantage for operators, enabling higher spectral efficiency and lower operational costs while placing them in a position to counter the offering from OTT players,” said Nokia senior vice president Michael Clever.
Clever also noted that this technology could bring practical and refined voice and video offerings, as well as high definition voice quality to mobile customers. The system can also be streamlined and integrated with current mobile broadband networks through video to voice handover technology.
Furthermore, NSN Greater China Region president Markus Borchert said Nokia’s ESRVCC solution provides added benefits, including more efficient utilization of network resources and rapid call setup times.
“Our hard work in integrating the VoLTE solution in China Mobile’s pre-commercial TD-LTE network paid off when we were able to complete this set of tests ahead of our competition,” Borchert said. “We will continue supporting the operators to provide the highest cor network efficiency possible.”
Sprint taps BroadSoft for VoLTE
Sprint recently announced a partnership with BroadSoft to transform its VoLTE/IMS offerings and enhance currently available VoIP services.
BroadSoft will provide access to its BroadWorks’ Service Centralization and Continuity program, which allows operators to deliver best-of-breed unified communication services over legacy GMS or CDMA networks. The application voice call continuity abilities will enable Sprint to transition UC services from existing networks to VoLTE arrangements.
