SAN MATEO, Calif.-The San Mateo, Calif., Police Department is now using Tropos Networks Inc.’s metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh network for law enforcement activities. With Tropos’ equipment, the police force has created a Wi-Fi hot zone in downtown San Mateo, giving officers wireless access to critical applications.
The SMPD has deployed 17 Wi-Fi cells across downtown San Mateo and plans to expand the system to 40 cells to cover the city’s critical crime areas. In addition, the SMPD plans to eventually allow fire, public works and other city departments to access the network.
The announcement follows Tropos’ news last week that it deployed a network in downtown Baton Rouge, La.
