Google Fiber, the superfast broadband network that claims to move 1 gigabit of data per second, is rolling out in Austin, Texas. Austin competed with Kansas City to be the first city to get Google Fiber, and lost narrowly. Late last year, Google connected the first homes in Hanover Heights in Kansas City.
Austin has been aggressively targeted by AT&T with its U-Verse service, and is also a major market for Time Warner Cable, which offers bundled cable, phone and Internet service. This weekend more than 800,000 Time Warner Cable customers in Austin lost phone service, so Google’s timing could not be better.
