FreedomPop has raised an additional $4.3 million, and has added new social media features that will allow users of its service to leverage their contacts to try to get more free data from their friends. The funding comes from existing investors DCM and Mangrove Capital, and values the company at a higher price than the previous round. FredomPop’s total funding to date stands at $11.2 million.
Brother can you spare some data?
FreedomPop customers will be able to see a graphic showing how much data each of their friends has left. The interface will enable users to ping their friends and ask for a data “loan,” or to send data to friends as a gift.
FreedomPop also said that it will give users 50 megabytes of free data each time they add a friend, whether or not they invited that friend to join the network.
Disuptive devices
FreedomPop sells devices that users can attach to their smartphones in order to access data plans. The company’s latest reported offering is an LTE clip that could connect tablets to LTE networks.
