D.C. upgrades subway communications system

WASHINGTON-Mayor Anthony Williams said the Washington, D.C., public-safety wireless network has been upgraded to operate in underground subway tunnels, complementing other improvements to a communications system that now enables police, firefighters and medics to communicate with each other throughout the District of Columbia.

“We need this capacity,” said Williams. “Transit is a prime target for terrorists. From the sarin attacks in Tokyo in 1995 to the recent tragedy in Madrid, we understand the need for direct communication throughout our city, both above and below ground.”
