China Telecom (CHA) continued to expand into the United States as its America’s division said it plans to open a “full-service” office in Chicago. China Telecom last month announced plans to open an Internet data center in Los Angeles.
“We realized that we needed to have a fully functional office in the area to better service our growing list of important customers, especially those in the financial, manufacturing and pharmaceutical sectors,” said Donald Tan, president of China Telecom Americas.
China Telecom recently reported it ended the third quarter of the year with more than 116 million CDMA customers in China. The company has also reportedly announced plans to partner with a domestic wireless provider to offer mobile services to Chinese visitors and students traveling to the United States.
As part of those plans, China Telecom also hinted that if the partnership proves successful, the company could take the next step and decide to deploy its own network infrastructure in the United States. As the carrier does not currently own spectrum in the domestic market, those deployment plans would likely have to include a U.S. partner.
“If the service is growing fast, maybe we can set up our own infrastructure,” Tan told Bloomberg News. “The money is no big problem for us.”
