5G demo carried out at DT’s lab in Bonn, Germany.
Huawei and Deutsche Telekom said they completed a demonstration of what is claimed to be the world’s first “5G” end-to-end autonomous network slicing.
The two companies had previously demonstrated an end-to-end system to validate network slicing technology for diverse use case demands.
Huawei said the autonomous end-to-end network slicing implementation adds dynamic and real-time slicing of the radio access network and data center, as well the interconnecting transmission network. The demo, conducted in DT’s 5G lab based in Bonn, Germany, showed how different network slices can be created automatically on a shared RAN, core and transport network.
“Network slicing is envisaged for 5G to provide differentiated connectivity quickly and efficiently for the diverse future applications that our customers will demand,” explained DT CTO Bruno Jacobfeuerborn. “With automated network slicing, the development of highly flexible end-to-end network slicing becomes more complete.”
Huawei said E2E network slicing is a foundational technology, which is required to support diversified services and is a key to the network architecture evolution. In that context, enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine-type communications and ultra-reliable low-latency communications are viewed as network classes that could be built as slices.
The demo implemented bandwidth-based transport network slicing consisting of TSDN controllers and underlying dense wave division multiplexing nodes.
Sonera, Nokia, to launch 5G in Helsinki area in 2018
Nordic-based telecommunications provider Sonera confirmed plans to launch 5G technology with partner Nokia in Finland’s capital Helsinki in 2018.
Sonera is fully owned by Swedish telco Telia Company. In January 2016, Telia and Ericsson entered into a strategic partnership to launch 5G services in Stockholm and Tallinn, Sweden, beginning in 2018. The partners recently performed a field tests of technology in Stockholm.
