Customers of the Google Project Fi MVNO service can now add up to 4 additional lines each at a $5 per month discount
Google continues to flesh out its Project Fi mobile telephone service, recently rolling out a discounted multiline “group” option.
Customers interested in the hybrid Wi-Fi/cellular service can now add up to four lines for $15 per month on top of the first line’s price of $20 per month. All of the service offerings remain the same, with unlimited voice calling and text messaging included in the base rate and cellular data priced at $10 per gigabyte.
Google’s hook is that it will refund customers for unused data, thus customers who purchase 3 GB of data, but only uses 1.5 GB will receive a $15 credit to their account. Customers who go over their purchased amount of data will receive text warnings, with any overage charged at the same $10 per GB amount.
The Google mobile virtual network operator service launched in April 2015, tapping into cellular network resources from Sprint and T-Mobile US – and more recently regional carrier U.S. Cellular – as well as a heavy reliance on Wi-Fi connectivity. Technology embedded into the service’s handsets seeks out the strongest signal to support voice and data communications.
Devices compatible with the service include Google’s recently launched Pixel models as well as the Huawei-built Nexus 6P and LG-assembled Nexus 5X. Google late last year announced availability of a free data-only SIM card providing access for tablet devices like the Apple iPad.
The service availability to consumers was initially limited in scope, but has since been opened up to all who are interested. Google noted earlier this year that customers were using an average of 1.6 GB of cellular data per month, and more recently claiming customers “spend about 95% of cellular time on LTE.”
