T-Mobile US updates JUMP, offers iPhone 6 deal

T-Mobile US updated its JUMP device financing program and unveiled a new iPhone 6 promotion

T-Mobile US’ much-hyped revamping of its “Un-carrier” moves kicked off today with the carrier announcing its JUMP on Demand offer and a lower monthly price point on the Apple iPhone 6 16 GB.

The carrier said its new JUMP program allows customers to upgrade their device up to three times per year on “select” new devices at no additional charge. Customers will be required to put their traded-in device through a “three-point check-up to ensure it’s in good working order” before the trade in is accepted.

The per-month device pricing is set to be slightly higher on the new offer as T-Mobile US is trimming the overall term length from 24 months on the original JUMP program to 18 months on the new program. However, T-Mobile US counters that the new JUMP on Demand program is now included in the pricing instead of being an additional $10 per month on the legacy plan. Customers can still purchase a device protection plan for $8 per month, which was included in the $10 per month charge for the legacy JUMP offering.

The JUMP plan was initially launched in mid-2013 as T-Mobile US’ Un-carrier 2.0 program, and allowed customers to upgrade their device up to twice each year. The first upgrade could not be accomplished until the customer was enrolled in the program for at least six months. T-Mobile US noted that more than 10 million customers have signed up for the current JUMP offer, upgrading their devices on average every 14 months.

Connected with the new program, T-Mobile US for a limited time is offering the entry-level iPhone 6 16GB for $15 per month over an 18-month term. The offer does require customers to either keep the device through the full 18 months before trading it in on a new device or keeping the device, or they can pay off the full remaining balance on the device at any time for a trade-in on a new device.

T-Mobile US was reported to be the biggest share gainer in terms of online pre-orders when the latest iPhone 6 model was launched last year.

Current JUMP customers can switch to the new program the next time they upgrade their device with the new terms. T-Mobile US said the new program begins on June 28.

T-Mobile US has hinted it plans to update nearly all of its Un-carrier programs in the coming days.
