Huawei ranks connected and developing nations in new report
The United States is the most connected country in the world, according to Huawei’s Global Connectivity Index, which considers investment in networks, computing and storage, as well as e-commerce and other economic variables.
Huawei, a global information and communication technology provider based in Shenzhen, China, released the report for free download on April 20.
Behind the U.S., the top 10 most-connected nations, in descending order, are: Sweden, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, South Korea, Japan and Norway.
In the report, Huawei staff base the U.S. dominance “on the strength of robust supply and demand of ICT services, and an advanced state of adoption …”
Chile, China and the United Arab Emirates, ranked 20th, 23rd and 22nd, respectively, leading the developing markets, according to Huawei.
From the report: “Overall, the 2015 GCI shows that 20% growth in ICT investment will increase a country’s [gross domestic product] by 1%. It also identifies five enablers of digital transformation – data centers, cloud services, big data, broadband, and the Internet of Things. These technologies represent the targets that stakeholders should focus their investments on in order to most efficiently transform their economies for the digital age.”
Of the 50 countries surveyed for the report, Huawei pegs Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Bangladesh and Pakistan as the least connected.
All economies are digitizing, and the GCI provides a guide of who’s ahead, who’s behind, why and who is poised to move up or back, Kevin Zhang, President of Huawei Corporate Marketing, said in a statement.
“The Global Connectivity Index is not merely a ranking of countries. We see it as a platform to partner with policymakers and enterprise leaders to identify, harness and create new digital economy opportunities with the aim of building a Better Connected World.”
Huawei has some 170,000 employees worldwide and has provided solutions to more than 170 countries. The company has 18 research and development facilities.
