Motorola Mobility Inc.’s (MMI) iDEN technology either received a new lease on life or an expiration date today as the company announced an extension to its supplier agreement to supply iDEN handset to NII Holdings Inc. (NIHD) through 2014.
NII, which was formerly the international arm for Nextel Communications Inc., currently provides iDEN-based services in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru. The company continues to have roaming agreements with Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) for iDEN services.
Motorola said the extension will also expand the scope of the agreement to provide devices for NII’s plans to build out 3G services in select markets as well as the integration of iDEN capabilities into those devices. Financial terms were not released.
Motorola Inc. announced late last year that it had extended its iDEN supplier agreement with Sprint Nextel through the end of 2013, at which time the carrier is looking to turn down that network in favor of its CDMA efforts.
