HONGKONG-Huawei Technologies Inc. moved to strengthen its U.S. business and microwave offering by investing $2 million in LightPointe Communications Co., a free-space optics firm.
Huawei joined other investors in a $17 million funding of the company.
Last year, LightPointe had entered into an OEM deal with the Chinese firm to supply FSO products to Huawei. The technology uses laser light to transmit data and serves as one of the alternatives to traditional gear like T1 lines.
Huawei deploys the protocol for such Chinese carriers as China Mobile, China Telecom and China Netcom.
