SUNOL, Calif.-The MultiMediaCard Association announced it will team with the Open Mobile Alliance standards group to develop copyright protection measures for removable MMC cards in mobile phones. Specifically, the MMCA said it will extend the OMA’s digital rights management specifications to its SecureMMC version 2.0 outline.
“Maintaining an open organization is the key to OMA’s vision for broad industry participation with groups like the MMCA,” said Jari Alvinen, chairman of the OMA’s board. “MMCA and OMA share common interests on standardization and target applications. The agreement between OMA and MMCA will greatly enhance the development of secure removable media based on OMA DRM specifications.”
The OMA has been keen to develop copyright protection mechanisms to encourage content developers to sell their wares in wireless. Those DRM specifications, however, generally involve sending and receiving content over wireless networks, not through removable memory cards.
The MMCA group has been working to promote MMC cards for mobile phones.
