BELLEVUE, Wash.—VoiceStream Wireless Corp. released additional information on its fourth quarter and full-year 2001 results showing the carrier added 667,400 net subscribers during the quarter and 2.2 million for the year ending 2001 with nearly 7 million wireless customers.
Contract subscribers, often considered more profitable than non-contract customers, represented 87 percent of the net subscriber additions for the quarter and composed 74 percent of the carrier’s subscriber base at the end of the year.
Customer churn fell from 5.1 percent during the third quarter to 4.8 percent in the fourth quarter, while average revenue per user including prepaid and roaming revenue remained at $49 for the quarter and the year.
VoiceStream also noted that even though less than 10 percent of its subscriber base have signed up for its iStream GPRS service during the fourth quarter, it expected the number to grow this year as it introduces additional devices.
Total revenues for the quarter were reported at $1.1 billion, an increase over the $1 billion reported the previous quarter. Net losses dropped from $732 million to $695 million during the same time frame.
For the year, VoiceStream posted total revenues of $4 billion with net losses of $3 billion.
