Comverse Network Systems introduced its Nex2Me wireless instant messaging solution, a Wireless Application Protocol and short message service suite that enables the creation of mobile communities shared by mobile and Internet users.
The system will notify users when a member of their instant messaging community is available for messages and allow a one-button click connection to initiate a live voice call with that member, or allow them to simply send a text message, the company said.
Messages can be sent either via a WAP application or by SMS, depending on what the wireless device supports.
“Next2Me takes instant messaging to another level by integrating full voice capabilities,” said Itsik Danziger, president and chief operating officer of Comverse.
Aimed more at the consumer market than business users, the Nex2Me platform includes various types of instant messaging applications developed both by Comverse as well as third-party developers.
The Personal Instant Communications application provides one-to-one mobile instant messaging based on both voice and text messaging. Mobile Matchfinder will connect two anonymous users around a shared topic of interest predefined by all users. Also, Mobile Chat enables both voice and chat sessions between multiple anonymous users who enter the preset chat “room.”
“Wireless instant messaging can build on the huge and rapidly growing base of instant messaging users on the Internet,” said industry analyst Jeff Pulver. “Mobile communications have the potential to harness the success of Internet instant messaging and extend this killer application into the mobile world.”
