Brunei kicks off 5G trial

Brunei launched a 5G pilot project in April 2021 to demonstrate 5G proof-of-concept network environments

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) announced that the Asian country is officially beginning 5G trials. The (AITI) is working with wholesale telecommunications provider Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN), the sultanate’s wholesale telecommunication service provider, as well as with Brunei’s three major operators — DST, Imagine (TelBru) and Progresif — on the trial.

Brunei launched a 5G pilot project in April 2021 in order to demonstrate 5G proof-of-concept network environments and to promote both the awareness and feasibility of the latest generation of cellular technology.

The trial will utilize new and existing radio frequency spectrum to provide high-capacity bandwidth in all high internet traffic areas, and according to AITI, the internet speed on the 5G network is expected to reach between 300 Mbps and one Gbps.

“Technology is an enabler with 5G infrastructure, data center, Cloud, IoT and other components are already available in Brunei Darussalam,” Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Steffen Oehler said at a recent talk, adding that the country’s network is already “built to carry 5G.”

“Ninety percent of base stations in the country are already modernized and in place with the technology to start 5G services in the country,” he said. “The infrastructure is ready for the 5G launch.”
