Telstra 5G is currently available in over 350 towns and cities across Australia

Australian operator Telstra Wholesale announced a range of new mobile solutions – including a new 5G service and a series of IoT products – at its annual customer event, Business Connect.

The Telstra Wholesale 5G service will be available starting in July, initially reaching more than 75% of Australians. This new offering will deliver mobile speeds up to 250 Mbps and access to mmWave where available.

Glenn Osborne, executive of the sales and wholesale segment at Telstra Wholesale, said: “The ability for our Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) customers to offer a premium 5G mobile plan, as part of their suite of mobile solutions, provides even more possibilities for these customers to unlock new growth opportunities and attract different audiences seeking the performance benefits and capacity of 5G. And they can do all of this while utilizing the capabilities of Telstra’s network.”

The firm noted that the 5G service plans will incorporate existing 4G plan features and will provide typical download speeds of 10-250 Mbps.

During its Business Connect event, the firm also announced new customizable IoT product range, which includes four key innovations for its wholesale customers:

-IoT connectivity for existing IoT providers: To provide value added connectivity on Telstra’s mobile network including the CatM1 network.

-Value added connectivity for MVNOs: For existing MVNOs to extend their range beyond mobile handheld and mobile broadband solutions leveraging their own proposition and devices on the platform they already use

-Wearables and consumer IoT: Connectivity solutions for new market entrants to provide watches, cameras, pendants and other consumer devices with connectivity to their end consumers.

-Telstra’s Track and Monitor product: A connectivity and device solution with enhanced service layers, suitable for the transport and logistics segment.

In related news, Telstra, Google and Accenture have recently joined forces to develop a new 5G powered augmented reality (AR) wayfinding experience at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.

The AR wayfinding experience is delivered on Google Cloud, with machine learning and computer-vision powered by the ARCore Geospatial API from Google.

Google trekker devices were used in the development of the experience to create a metric model of Marvel Stadium that represents the appearance and position of the physical 3D world. GPS readings and environment scans were then matched with 360-degree images using the ARCore Geospatial API.

The convergence of cloud, the ARCore Geospatial API and 5G networking gives users the ability to interact with content, digital character displays, virtual brand experiences and indoor wayfinding, among other features.

Kim Krogh Andersen, Telstra group executive of products and technology, said: “This collaboration with two major technology players marks another important step in our ambition to create one of the world’s most technologically advanced stadiums here in Australia. It will enable us to deepen our partnership with the Australian Football |League (AFL) and deliver more immersive and innovative experiences for fans at Marvel Stadium.”

Telstra has been working with the AFL to evolve the stadium experience, which includes a 5G upgrade to support connectivity for fans and applications such as artificial intelligence, in-stadium streaming and on-field player performance tracking.

Telstra 5G is currently available in over 350 towns and cities, covering more than 77.5% of Australia’s population.
