Kagan: Apple battery problem back with new iPhone iOS update

Suddenly, the iPhone battery-gate problem is back again, full force, after the latest iOS 11.4 update. You would think after dealing with the expensive and embarrassing battery problem several months ago, Apple would never again go anywhere near the issue. That they would be very careful to make sure their updates were good-to-go. However, with the most recent iOS update, the battery-gate problem is suddenly back on, and it’s worse than ever.

I like Apple. I trust Apple. Whenever they issue an update, I download and install it like clockwork. However, they are shaking that valuable trust. Last week I updated to iOS 11.4. Right after that a funny thing started to happen. My iPhone with a brand-new battery that held its charge, suddenly was losing power rapidly throughout the day.

Apple iOS update battery problem back and worse than ever

Typically, I plug in throughout the day to keep the phone fully charged. At the end of the day I plug the iPhone in and give it a full charge before bed. Did that as usual then went to bed. A couple of hours later I woke up and noticed the battery was down to 42 percent. Strange. I turned over and went back to sleep.

At daybreak I woke up and like always, checked my iPhone and surprise! Nothing. It was dead. I have never woken up with a dead iPhone before. I could not check email, text messages, weather, news, nothing. I was alone in the world. It was very isolating.

Not only that, I had programmed my iPhone alarm clock to wake me up. It failed. It was dead as a doornail. So, I had to change my morning meeting.

Plus, this was not just a one-day problem. The iPhone has been losing its charge and every morning when I wake up, it’s completely dead.

Apple iOS 11.4 update exhausts iPhone battery leaving it dead as doornail

What’s up Apple? Why do we have to go through this upgrade from hell…again? Why didn’t you make sure this was a clean update? Making sure updates are road-ready is key to keeping customer relationships strong. Why did you fail at this basic principle?

I wonder how many people around the world who use their iPhone as their alarm clock woke up late after the iOS update? How many missed their early morning meetings or flight to another city or dentist appointment or meeting with a client or the boss?

You see, the iPhone is more than just a cellular phone. It’s the center of our universe. Not just the iPhone, but the Google Android like Samsung Galaxy is as well. These are not just devices. They are key pieces in the puzzle of our lives. They are the remote control for everything we do in life.

This could be funny in a late-night comedy show, except for the fact that hundreds of millions of us depend on these devices. Over time we have grown to depend on these devices to help us manage everything about our lives. This is great until one morning when the iPhone is dead as a doornail.

Two messages to Apple engineers

So, as Apple, Google, Samsung and others continue to woo us with their intoxicating technology, it’s up to each of us to realize we cannot depend on them any more than any other piece of tech we use each day.

Remember, I know Apple. I like Apple. But why do they seem to keep making these mistakes. They should know better. It’s not like this was a hidden problem that jumped up and surprised them.

No, as soon as the update was complete my battery started losing its charge. Sure, Apple will come up with a fix. They always do. However, this is a problem that should never have happened.

Two messages to Apple engineers… one, fix this update ASAP. And two, look before you leap. Make sure before you unleash and update, these obvious flaws are found and not released into the world. Just saying. After all, it’s your valuable brand that is at stake. Stop chipping away at its value.
