Iconectiv, which recently gained oversight of the nation’s LNPA program, focused on fraud prevention, growing CTIA common short code program.
On this week’s “Carrier Wrap” we speak with Scott Puopolo, EVP of the information solutions business at Iconectiv, to discuss the firms work with industry trade group CTIA on its common short code program and the importance of security for the platform.
Poupolo began by providing some background on the company, which is actually pretty handy as it does have a somewhat convoluted history. The short version is that the firm been around for more than 30 years, with most knowing its operations under the Telcordia name, which is now owned by Ericsson and operates as Iconectiv.
The company made significant waves last year when it was selected by the North American Portability Management as the nation’s Local Number Portability Administrator for all seven of the U.S. Number Portability Administration Center regions. The Federal Communications Commission initially granted provisional approval to Telcordia in early 2015, in a move to handle the more than 100,000 phone numbers said to be ported each day.
The agreement will see Iconectiv serve as the nation’s LNPA for an initial five-year contract. Iconectiv replaced long-time LNPA Neustar in overseeing the ability for consumers and businesses to port their phone numbers between service providers.
Neustar, which has been the administrator and beneficiary of the multimillion-dollar contract since 1997, claimed the process of selecting a new LNPA was “substantially defective” and that the proposed vendor change “presents substantial transition risks and cost to the industry and the consumers it serves.” The company previously claimed the process was corrupted when a confidential email was posted in the FCC docket.
Puopolo, who joined Iconectiv last November having previously served as VP and global lead of Cisco Systems’ Service Provider Transformation Group, also touched on the company’s work with CTIA on the short code program, including efforts to maintain security and reduce fraud in the initiative.
